Ready to plan a birthday party that they won’t forget? From decorations to party favours, and of course, the perfect cake, read on for the latest in kids party trends for autumn and winter!

COOKING PARTY

A cooking party is a great and inexpensive way to keep the kiddies entertained. Children could make their own pizzas or offer a menu of preselected kid friendly meals like nachos and homemade guacamole. You can find inexpensive paper lanterns and pompoms to decorate on http://www.pinkfrosting.com.au. Cheap piñatas are also available on http://www.thepartypeople.com.au. As a party favour, the kids can take away loot bags with mini kids cook books which can be found on eBay - a great and inexpensive way to keep them excited about cooking long after the candles have been blown out. You can even have them make their own dessert in lieu of a cake! This chocolate cake in a mug recipe is super quick and easy - (http://www.kidspot.com.au/best-recipes/Kids-cooking+5/Cake-in-a-mug-recipe+2746.htm)

GARDEN PARTY

This is one best reserved for autumn or the end of winter when the weather is a bit more cooperative... A garden party is perfect for little girls, especially those who love fairies. You could plan one at a local botanical garden or better yet, have one at home!

Transform your own backyard into a fairy wonderland with lots of streamers hanging from the trees and a shaded marquee (you can hire them on www.gumtree.com.au) Have the children dress up as fairies and have them plant pots of pretty flowers (good for them to get in touch with nature - and you get some lovely pots of flowers at the end of it!) As a party favour, let the kids plant some seeds in a mini flower pot so that they can watch the flower grow and appreciate it long after the party has finished. Mini flower pots and seedlings can be purchased from your local Bunnings for a relatively good price (check www.bunnings.com.au for your closest store) For a cake, stick with the garden theme and have your cake decorator put together a "naked cake" (a cake where the sponge and filling is exposed) and garnished in real edible flowers.

ART STUDIO

Have a budding Michelangelo on your hands? Run an at-home party lesson or look into art packages in your local area. The Art Factory has a handful of locations over Melbourne (www.theartfactory.com.au) and they can even provide you with a mobile service. Activities can include pottery, painting or craft classes. To have an art party at home, you can pick up some cheap canvases from Office Works (www.officeworks.com.au) and paints from your local art store. Get really creative and messy by adding glitter, feathers and embellishments to prints - and even better, the kids can take home their beautiful creations. Fill some small brown paper bags with some paints and paint brushes as party favours. For a cake, get your local cake decorator to cover the cake only with fondant and the kids can paint it with edible food colouring!

WINTER WONDERLAND

If your child's party is smack-bang in the middle of winter, why not turn your house into a winter wonderland? Start off with snowflake or penguin themed garland, confetti or other decorations. Fake snow sprayed on the edges of the windows can give a magical effect when teamed with fairy lights twinkling outside. (Snow in a can is really cheap and you can find it on (www.partiesonline.com.au). You can make your own decorations, buy them at your local craft shop, or online.

Serve comfort food instead of the usual suspects. Have a soup bar with 3 or different soups and crackers on offer and serve hot cocoa and cider to keep your guests warm and cozy.

Stick to a winter theme when it comes to the cake or have individual cupcakes boxed and embellished with glitter and snowflakes.

Winter parties can be a real challenge with bad weather and kids indoors pepped up on sugar - but I hope this post was able to help some of you plan your winter babies next birthday party!

Peace, love & cupcakes,

Sue-Ellen xoxo
